How to Protect Your Hardwood Floors When You Have Pets

According to the latest research by the American Pet Products Association (APPA), 66% of U.S. households have at least one pet. That means millions of homes are filled with furry companions—90 million dogs and 94 million cats to be exact! While pets bring joy and companionship, they can also make maintaining beautiful hardwood floors a challenge. Scratches, dirt, and accidents can leave floors looking dull over time.
Want to enjoy both your pets and your hardwood floors? Here are three simple tips to keep them looking their best:
1. Prevent Scratches on Your Hardwood Floors
One of the biggest concerns for pet owners with hardwood floors is scratches from claws. To minimize damage:
Trim your pet’s nails regularly – This is especially important for larger dogs that exert more pressure when running or playing.
Use area rugs at entrances – This helps reduce dirt and debris that can cause scratches.
Dry dust frequently – Keeping dirt to a minimum prevents it from acting like sandpaper on your floors.
2. Protect Your Floors from Pet Accidents
Accidents happen, but they don’t have to ruin your hardwood flooring. Pet urine and vomit contain acids that can damage the finish and floorboards. Here’s how to prevent and manage accidents:
Proper training – Teaching your pet to go outside or use a designated area indoors is the best prevention.
Use absorbent training pads – These pads protect your floors with an absorbent surface and plastic backing to prevent liquid seepage.
Clean up quickly – Use Quick Shine Daily Care Cleaner to easily remove messes—just spray, wipe, and walk away!
3. Keep Food and Water Mess-Free
Mealtime can be messy, leading to spilled water and food that may damage your floors. To keep your hardwood looking great:
Use stable, heavy bowls – This prevents tipping and unnecessary spills.
Place a waterproof mat under bowls – Mats protect your floors from water damage and prevent bowls from sliding and scratching the surface.

Does it build up on the floors?
Hi Judy,
We recommend applying Quick Shine every 2-6 months when needed to your floors. Simply maintain the shine in between applications with our Quick Shine Cleaners. As long as you are not applying the finish too frequently, you should never develop a buildup on your floors.
I love the quick shine but yes too often will buildup, which cleaner do you recommend for old house wood floors after application? the multi surface or the wood – high traffic?
Hi Davida,
We recommend Quick Shine Hardwood Floor Cleaner to clean the floor surface and maintain the shine. Our general rule of thumb is to only apply our Finishes every 2-6 months when needed and only use our cleaner in between.
